"I couldna' done it without my players."

-Casey Stengel-

[ ] A quick synopsis: The Ohio Old-Time Strat-O-Matic League (OOSL) brings baseball players from 1876 to the present together to compete against each other in two Leagues. The most sophisticated baseball computer simulation is used to magickly bring all of it to glorious life. Owners can trade players, devise lineups, create rotations, and generally do everything that Owners, General Managers and Field Managers do in real life -- but without spending millions of dollars. Click on the above text-link to the OOSL Web Site to find out more about the League.

[ ] The New York Giants were one of the "Original 16" OOSL franchises. Owner/General Manager/Field Manager Dirk Knemeyer has guided the club since its inception.

[ ] The Giants have been perhaps the most successful franchise in OOSL history to date. Winners of both the first World's Series in 1994 and the second World's Series in 1995, the Giants have won the National League East Division title every year. However, two years removed from a World's Series title, this is a hungry and motivated group.

[ ] It all began in 1994 with the original draft. Jimmie Foxx was the first pick in team history and quickly made good on his selection, winning the 1994 National League Player of the Year award while leading the team to the World's Championship.

[ ] However, Foxx was only the tip-of-the-iceberg. Also selected were Honus Wagner, Walter Johnson, and Ed Walsh. These three original Giants remain with the team even today. Other stars picked up in the original draft include Nap Lajoie, Nolan Ryan, Dazzy Vance, Rickey Henderson, Roger Clemens, Addie Joss, George Brett, Eddie Cicotte, Barry Bonds, Roy Campanella, Yogi Berra, Goose Gossage, and Wee Willie Keeler. Needless to say, many of these fellows helped in the construction of the current team, to whom you will be introduced later.

[ ] After the draft some important trades were made which have solidified the club. The most significant of those was the acquisition of Christy Mathewson. Since donning the Giant uniform in 1994 he has never taken it off, essentially serving as an original member of the team.

[ ] The 1994 Giants were perhaps the most successful team ever in OOSL history. Winning exactly 100 games in a competitive 8 team National League, the Giants cruised through the post-season, going 9-3 against fine teams from Cincinnati and Detroit. In fact, it was only three years later, in 1997, that any other team (including other Giants teams) were able to reach the 100 win plateau. Notably, two rounds of expansion had happened and the talent pool across the OOSL was much diluted. The 1994 squad was special.

[ ] In 1995, the Giants narrowly beat a surprising Pittsburgh Pirate team for the National League East (winning 91 games to 88 for the Bucs) before beating Cincinnati again in the National League Championship Series and struggling past a determined Philadelphia A's club in the World's Series. While this is one of only two Giants World's Series Champions, it is probably the weakest team on paper for this proud franchise.

[ ] The 1996 season was a very important turning point in the history of the franchise: it saw the cementing of the current foundation which hopes to bring the glory back to New York. Rookies Oscar Charleston and Biz Mackey were acquired for a broad package which included Jimmie Foxx and Barry Bonds; meanwhile, Carl Hubbell was solidified as a permanent resident of the Polo Grounds. While the nucleus was taking form the results were less-than-expected: the Giants won the NL East by a comfortable margin before losing the National League Championship Series in a fierce seven game epic.

[ ] Before the 1997 campaign began, management pulled off a spectacular deal, sending a huge package including Three Finger Brown, Lefty Gomez, Jimmie Foxx (who was re-acquired that off-season and did not play a game for the club), and others for the incomparable Babe Ruth. A Charleston-Ruth-Cobb outfield is right out of an All-Time Best Team and the happy reality in New York ever since that trade.

[ ] As for the season itself, the Giants won an OOSL record 110 games, beating the hard luck Cincinnati club (who had just moved to the NL East) by ten games. After dismissing the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Championship Series, the Giants met the Chicago White Sox, 1996 OOSL World's Series Champions, in the final series. This dream series between the only World's Series Championship teams in OOSL history turned out to be a New York nightmare as the Giants exited meekly in seven games.

[ ] 1998 saw success return to New York at the highest level as the Giants won their third World's Series title. Arguably the greatest team in OOSL history, the Giants won a breathtaking 118 games during the Regular Season before winning three post-season series, including a 5-4 classic World's Series against the Boston Red Sox. The club featured a lineup that was lethal from top-to-bottom, including tradition Giants such as Wagner, Charleston, Mackey, Johnson, Mathewson, Hubbell, and Walsh, augmented by other superstars like Rogers Hornsby, Turkey Stearnes, Buck Leonard, and Mel Ott. This was a special club.

[ ] The 1999 team will bring an entirely different look to the Polo Grounds. The club was unable to retain a large number of their star players and, while still a solid team, will not enjoy the dominance that previous units have. The re-addition of Babe Ruth should help to ease the transition. However, the players in this outfit love a challenge and consider themselves the favorites to win the World's Series again - until someone else proves they can knock off the reigning champs.
