The Saint Louis Cardinals are owned by John Mortimer, one of the expansion owners of 1997.

These Saint Louis Cardinals were one of the original OOSL National League Franchises. They have been captained by John Mortimer since he entered the League in 1997. Their five-year National League record stands at 364-406 for a .473 winning percentage. Under John Mortimer they are 161-147 for a .523 winning percentage. They have won one Division title (under Mortimer's guidance) and their post-season record stands at 1-4 for a .200 winning percentage. They have finished as high as first, and as low as fourth.

After setting many OOSL marks for offensive output in their 1997 pennant winning campaign, the Cardinal braintrust worked to improve those two areas of the team which were lacking, namely pitching and defense. To that end they decided to trade away the Rajah, Rogers Hornsby, and bring in players such as Willie Mays, Whitey Ford, and JR Richard among others in an effort to make the club more well-rounded. Mays in particular has always been an OOSL enigma, with his production never reaching it's potential wherever he's played. With St. Louis in 1998 he had his best year by far (26-92-.284), but it could not make up for the disappointing seasons by some other Cardinal players as the Red Birds floundered in a sea of mediocrity all season. Richard and `97 MVP Roberto Clemente, in particular, fell far short of expectations, as JR stumbled to a 11-17, 4.42 record while Bob produced a very ordinary 11-60-.279 season. Whitey Ford's 15 wins and Big Jeff Heath's slugging (33-84-.311) were among the team's few bright lights. Willie McCovey also came through with his obligitory 100 RBI.

Despite the step backwards the franchise took last season, the Cards are optimistic for a return to the post season in 1999, and have once again made several key trades to revamp their roster. The emphasis is still on offense, and always will be as long as their home games are played in Sportsmans Park (read "forever"), but their pitching staff and team defense continue to improve and the locals in St' Louis are eagerly awaiting the start of another pennant chase!
