[ All-Star Batter ]
The 1999 OOSL All-Star Roster

". . . All-Star starters are voted upon by the entire league constituency . . ."

-The OOSL Constitution-

[ ] The 1999 OOSL All-Star Break is here. The 100 game mark has been reached, pennant races are in full swing, players are assaulting the record books, a season of trades are behind us -- and the Home Stretch is in front of us. But not before a short respite from the seriousness of the flag chase. The best of the best will compete in an OOSL tradition, the All-Star Series and Home Run Derby.

[ ] The All-Star Series is an innovation of the OOSL. Rather than have a mid-season game and give the stars an at-bat or two to shine, we block out 15 days in the schedule during the month of July and have a full blown, best-of-seven game All-Star Series.

[ ] The American League will host this year's series (Games 1, 2, 6, 7) and has chosen Comiskey Park, home of the Chicago White Sox, as the park to play in. The National League, which will host the Home Run Derby, has selected Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, to call the home field. It should be a great series in that great OOSL city of Chicago! Can the pitchers of both Leagues regain control after last year's double-digit slugfests? Or will this year's sluggers retain mastery over the best hurlers of both Leagues? Can the Americans make it two in a row?

[ ] Although there is no OOSL Rule that mandates every team be represented on the All-Star Rosters, every team is represented on the 1999 American and National All-Star Rosters. All but four teams have at least one player on the All-Star First Team (starter), and six teams have at least two First Teamers. Two teams have three First Teamers. Oddly enough, all of the above statements are equally split between the two Leagues! Even more interesting is that there are other statistical evidences of amazing parity. Let's take a look.

[ ] Of course, it isn't all evenly split up between the Leagues so nicely. Examples are: three AL clubs and zero NL clubs have a single Second Teamer, one AL and three NL have two Second Teamers, one AL and two NL have three Second Teamers, zero AL and two NL have four Second Teamers, one AL and zero NL have five Second Teamers, and one AL and zero NL have seven Second Teamers. All in all, the splits are amazingly close. What does it all mean? I'm not sure, but it's one of the many things that make the OOSL fun to be a part of -- a story within a story . . . within a story.

[ ] Accompanying the All-Star Series is a unique Home Run Derby contest, with rules created specifically by the OOSL. The Home Run Derby is conducted prior to the fourth game of the series. When picking the All-Star reserves the League Manager must also assign six All-Stars to represent the league in the Home Run Derby. Each batter gets ten outs before his home run hitting attempts are over. Both an individual and a team Home Run Champion are crowned.
