The 1998 Annual OOSL Spring Draft

[ ] Here we are folks! This page is your source for the 1998 Annual OOSL Draft. This year we have the added excitement of a large influx of Negro Leaguers to spur us on to new heights. This year the Draft will be done piecemeal -- which means it will be done slowly over several days or more. Everyone will have plenty of time to explore all options before selecting. No excuses this year for picking poorly! The Draft will be documented here as it happens, so check back often.

.
The 1998 Draft Order

[ ] Because of this year's influx of Negro League talent, the OOSL Executive Committee has decided that the draft will be "tiered" in nature. The weaker teams will be given an edge in the Draft in order to bring the OOSL closer to parity, and become more competitive. Thus, the draft will be at least seven rounds in length. Teams that lost players outright already without compensation will have the option to fill those holes at the end of the draft. Any draft picks that have been traded translate into *when that team is slated to pick in the draft.* Here is the draft order with trades and compensation taken into account. This Draft Order assumes that all teams will release the maximum allowable players (5). As you know, you must release a number of players equal to the number of Draft Selections that you will be using. Some teams will not use all of the picks listed for them here because they will not be releasing 5 players. Traded Draft Selections are documented in this Draft Order, with overall Draft Selection Number following the Team Abbreviation.

This was the Order before Draft Day. It is not the updated Draft Order that includes all the traded picks since Draft Day began. The Updated Draft Order is kept in the 1998 Annual Draft section.

1998 Player Drops

[ ] First of all, we have player drops. Considering the immediate nature of the draft, teams can choose to wait until their first pick in the draft before announcing their drops. As the drops are the lowest common denominator of players, it will not penalize anyone if drops are not known in their totality until, say, the third round: who would draft those players with "good" picks anyway?

[ ] Each team has no more than five draft picks, so each team, if they want to make a full five picks, must drop a number of players to bring their roster down to 45 players. We, of course, can have no more than 50 people in our organization at one time. Below is a list, by team, of how many players are in each organization at present:

American League National League

Baltimore......49 Boston.......50
Boston.........49 Brooklyn.....47
Chicago........46 Chicago......50
Cleveland......48 Cincinnati...48
Detroit........49 Houston......49
Homestead......50 Kansas City..50
Minnesota......49 Milwaukee....50
New York.......47 Montreal.....50
Philadelphia...50 New York.....48
Saint Louis....49 Philadelphia.49
Toronto........50 Pittsburgh...50
Washington.....50 Saint Louis..50

[ ] The teams that are under 50 are such because of losing pitchers to the changing innings minimum to qualify for the league. As we all recall, the Constitution states that, in a normal circumstance, each team must have 50 players in its organization.

[ ] The draft will in fact begin tomorrow night (3/28/98). I anticipate sending a posting with trades right before then or even concurrently. Be prepared to make your drops no later than when you make your first pick in the draft.

[ ] If you have any other questions pertaining to the draft, please contact the OOSL League Office.
